Healthy Habits For Developers.

Being a developer comes with a lot of pressure that no one teaches you. You are most likely to be subjected to long working hours which includes overtime and sometimes working on weekends too. At my last job I had to work 7 days a week and still had to carry work home. That kind of habit made my social life non-existent and my body turn into a potato I am still peeling (shoutout to Chloe Ting). After I left my job I realized that I needed to change and come up with a way that allows me to take care of my career and take care of myself in the process. Before I continue please do remember that what’s good for me is not good for you.

  1. The first thing I had to work on was my diet. I mostly ate junk food and my sweet tooth did not help. Meal prepping really helped me. It became easier to add more fruits and vegetables to my daily meals.
  2. Having a schedule and dividing tasks into smaller manageable chunks.
  3. Taking long breaks. It honestly didn’t make sense for me to code for 4 hours and take a 30 minute break. Personally 30 minutes seems like modern day slavery. The least I can work with is 1 hour to make cater for a short stroll and a proper meal.
  4. Working out. Like I mentioned earlier I gained a lot weight this year and losing it and working at the same the same time was a mammoth’s task. Working out and jogging helped me combat my anxiety. Each session helped me feel refreshed and alive. I highly recommend this.
  5. Spend time with people that love you. Your laptop/desktop is not your friend, interact with real people. I am still bummed by all the hangouts I missed and will never make up for. This includes relationships that I cannot revive.
  6. Always stay hydrated.

It’s pretty hard to do all this with all the pressure that comes with the field I am in but pushing and trying to make these habits a lifestyle has really helped my health both physically and mentally.
