Unemployment: Surviving Temporary Inertia

“Survival is the ability to swim in strange waters” — Frank Hebert

When I wrote my last exam I knew exactly the next stage I was going to face, unemployment. I know it is temporary but either way, I have to mentally, emotionally, and financially be prepared for it. So, here is my game plan, and who knows, it might help you too.

  1. Be honest with yourself — Often at times, I find myself scrolling through my wishlists and imagining what I will do when I get all those items. I think about how happy I will be when my dreams come true but for now, I have to be content with where I am whilst I work on getting where I want to be.
  2. Plan accordingly— This means just having a rough idea of how you plan on surviving and getting out of this temporary situation. Know exactly how your finances will be used and don’t pretend you don’t have debt and expenses.
  3. Be kind to yourself — You are doing your best, even when nobody sees it.
  4. Talk to someone and ask for help — There is no harm in networking and reaching out to people that can help. When you feel low, talk to someone, it’s not all unicorns and rainbows in this state.
  5. Save and invest what you can
  6. Skill-up — This is what is very important. There is a lot of free content on the internet that will help you add more skills to your stack and this will help you with your next job application.

Remember, no situation is temporary. It’s going to be okay.
